"Fine words butter no parsnips"

I thought this one would be appropriate to start off with.

Meaning:-

Promises or compliments are very nice poured gently into the ear but aren't really very useful if they are not backed up by action. I've heard another variant of this one "Fair words butter no cabbage". I DO like a bit of cabbage.
